Pastaio London 2.0

Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio collaborates with Stevie Parle again
Located on Westfield White City’s ‘Eat Street,’ Design Research Studio have collaborated again with Stevie Parle to design the second Pastaio Restaurant.
Creating a common language between the two sites, the new Pastaio draws from the interior design of the Ganton St site with long communal dining tables, clean backdrop of industrial materials, bold colours and even more graphic terrazzo with oversized chunks of marble.
Responding to the bustling shopping context of Westfield, the interior is inspired by fashion retail design. The interior celebrates fresh pasta dishes as the ultimate limited-edition purchase. Aligned to the main entrance to the restaurant, the greeter station features a display plinth in which the changing pasta dish of the week is exhibited.
With two floors of dining and a double height space, the new Pastaio is much larger than the Soho site, allowing for two different atmospheres and varied seating options. Like the Soho site, guests can dine at long communal tables, where the activity of the open bar, kitchen and pasta-making station are the focus. Within the double height space, a new sculptural staircase is suspended from the ceiling connecting to the more intimate and quieter upper level dining where guests can also sit in comfortable private booths.
Interior features include neon signage, our OPAL pendants and SLAB chairs which were launched at the Milan Salone in April 2019. Similarly, to the site in Soho, Artist Rob Lowe AKA Supermundane has designed a unique and colourful mural inspired by pasta geometries which contrasts against the industrial stainless steel of the kitchen and monochrome terrazzo.
Other key elements of the design include a new extension to the front façade clad in a bold ultra-marine blue tile making the restaurant easily identifiable amongst the other units. The extension creates an outside covered dining area, but more importantly, brings a part of the back-of-house kitchen experience to the street frontage. Shoppers and passers-by can see chefs rolling and hand-making fresh pasta daily.
The space is accented with oak butcher’s block work tops and a bespoke timber unit displaying sacks of flour and pasta drying racks. By night the area converts into an informal and relaxed chefs table with counter height seating amongst the pasta-making machines and ingredients.
