Tom Dixon at London Craft Week
8 - 12 May 2019
Ahead of Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio and IKEA’s latest collaboration for Chelsea Flower Show 2019, we will host a series of workshops and activities to inform and inspire new ways of using plants at our showroom in Coal Drops Yard.
Craft is at the heart of our design, prototypes, and products. Nearly all of our extraordinary objects are either conceived or created by hand.
It’s true we have a fascination for manufacturing and heavy industry and enjoy our experiments in precision digitalised machinery. But we continuously return to the physical interaction between designer and material to solve problems and create interesting interventions.
For London Craft Week, we highlight some of our favourite products that have artisanal qualities and explore the skills and craftsmanship involved.
Within our London flagship store we have dedicated a space, The Factory, which serves as a pre-production small batch manufacturing workshop where ideas can be tested out and prototypes created. Since launching, we have held Etch light making workshops, ceramics workshops, electronics assembly lines, a wreath making class with Wild At Heart and now a terrarium class hosted by The Botanical Boys. The workshops are designed to encourage the public to participate in the joys of craft, construction, fabrication and assembly.
The Botanical Boys will be taking over the Factory during LCW with a ‘Grow’ workshop, which involves terrarium-making to inspire new ways of using plants. Spaces are limited, for more information please visit https://www.londoncraftweek.com/events/tom-dixon-grow#sthash.VMt0RiJo.dpbs
Join us at the shop - Thursday 9th May
Open evening at Coal Drops Yard
On Thursday evening from 6-9pm, guests can enjoy complimentary drinks in the shop provided by Sipsmith and music by Rhythm Studio DJ, Chris D Gromoboy. We will be offering 20% off selected items (excluding newness) and shoppers will receive a Seedlip gift with any purchase.
Bash Vessel Small
A small hand-beaten bowl in gold-plated brass, with a pleasing matt finish. Presented in distinctive packaging, the bowl is both decorative and functional. Each piece is hand-made and therefore will have a unique personality. Ideal for us as an extravagant fruit bowl or as a contemporary sculpture. Available in large, small and in gold. Use with dry food only and wash in warm soapy water and dry with a soft cloth.
Beat Stout Pendant Black
Made in solid brass, the Beat Stout Black has a patina black external surface in contrast to its warm, golden interior. The Beat Light can be used in many different configurations to create a dramatic statement. Hang them individually or as a group using one or more of the shapes and one of our round or linear pendant systems.
Carved Vase Small Black
Mouth-blown, double layered black and white glass has been acutely cut back to define a series of circular motifs. Artisanal glass makers in India carefully carved away layers of glass in a design process that explores the opaque, the translucent and the transparent. The intention was for the chunky and heavy glass to take on an ethereal lightness.
