“For over 2000 years London has achieved success by maintaining its reputation as a centre for the production and distribution of goods and ideas, directly linked with open attitudes to immigration, technology and change.”

-          Dr Jacqueline Riding

Our neighbourhood just got a little busier with the opening of Coal Drops Yard, King's Cross. The Thomas Heatherwick designed space has transformed the Coal drop platforms of old into a unique new shopping destination for London.

Kings Cross and the Coal Drops Yard has played an important role in London’s success – and it’s for that reason that we have located to The Coal Office.

The Coal Drops Yard shopping district is just the latest chapter in the colourful history of these unusual buildings.

You can find the Tom Dixon shop at the entrance, below the Coal Office restaurant.

A brief history

The main Coal Building was built in 1851 by Lewis Cubitt as part of the goods yard on the bank of Regents Canal; the building was used by clerical staff who dealt with the import and export of coal.

In the early 1860's two additional blocks were attached to the main building, these blocks were used by staff dealing with the distribution of fish into London.

The original cracked and rough bricks remain, laid the same year as The Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace, and survived a fire (that gutted the building) in 1983.

It was from the early 80s, that the infamous rave scene exploded across the city and the disused warehouses of the Kings Cross area were a perfect location.

The Cross nightclub was located in the arches of Bagley Walk which is now our home. It now functions as a live Studio, combining shop, workshop and office all under one roof, with the culinary delights of a brand-new restaurant and roof terrace.

'For us it was imperative not just to find a new office or shop; it was vital to find a new home. London isn't just another city. It is where it all started. We will use these 17,500 square feet in this incredible location as a platform to broadcast our latest ideas in interior design, product innovation and experiments in food, functionality and future living.'

- Tom Dixon

Against the industrial backdrop of Coal Drops Yard, The Coal Office will lead the way as a multi-disciplinary platform for innovation in design.
