Tom Dixon in Conversation with Giulio Cappellini

Tom in conversation with Giulio Cappellini via Hologram, discussing the limited edition S-Chair and reflecting on 60 years of Salone.

During 24 hours in Milan, Tom Dixon's Hologram spoke with Giulio Cappellini, Italian designer and creative director of the world renowned Italian design firm, Cappellini.

Although Cappellini launched as a family business in 1946, Giulio joined in the early 1980s, emphasising design manufacturing. Giulio identified, fostered and collaborated with emerging talents from across the world – including Tom Dixon.

During 24-Milan, Tom and Giulio discussed the importance of design, both in Italy and globally. Whilst Milan is "the capital of design... global design" (Cappellini), holding the annual fair Salone del Mobile, it is not bound to this locality. Giulio tells Tom about his discovery of British design.

“I’m very curious, so when I started working with Cappellini, I said to myself, ‘I cannot think that everything is happening all in Italy.’, so I started to travel to see what was going on worldwide – Europe, Japan, North America…”

During 24-Milan they presented their collaboration: the limited-edition S-Chair. Tom explains how both him and Giulio came together to create a single, unique piece:

“[The piece combines Cappellini’s] 200 year old history with our 30 year old history… but it is also refreshed and made modern again by using antique textiles.”
