Designer of the Year 2021: Tom Dixon
Elle Decor British Design Awards 2021
Tom Dixon has been awarded the 2021 Elle Decoration British Design Award. The British Design Award is awarded to designers and brands who have "strived to make our spaces happier, healthier and mores sustainable" during the past year.
With a career that spans over 30 years and a large catalogue of products, Tom has also designed the interiors of hotels, experimental spaces and restaurants, including the Coal Office Restaurant at his own King's Cross HQ.
Throughout 2020, Tom designed new product and interior collections, pushing the boundaries with materials and manufacturing. CORK is a carbon-negative collection of furniture, and SWIRL is a range of accessories formed from surplus marble dust. He also created MASS, a series of highly polished brass furniture, made from a single extrusion.
"It's been a punishing, complex and chaotic year and we have had to adapt, deconstruct and reshape ourselves to continually survive." - Tom Dixon
Mass 2.0 Console Table
A family of super-polished solid brass furniture manufactured in the UK and made from one single extruded box section of brass. By using the most familiar unit in furniture construction – the plank – and presenting a series of familiar objects in a highly polished gold hued metal, Dixon manages to make domestic archetypes into monumental heavyweight sculpture. The rectangular tube is used in a multitude of configurations and will eventually be presented as a made to measure construction set, with a series of predetermined junctions that allow architects and interior designers the liberty to construct their own Mass artefact.
