Tom Dixon Unveils LIMITED at Design Miami 2021

1st – 5th December 2021

This December at Design Miami, we unveil Tom Dixon LIMITED by Design Research Studio.

Our exhibition within the Fair and the objects on display will fuse the creative directorship of Tom Dixon and Design Research Studio, overseen by Managing Director Helene Bangsboo Anderson.

Marking his first time back at Design Miami in over 10 years, Tom will be returning to the exhibitor’s programme to present our new collections, created during the height of the pandemic, including a curated selection of our new made-to-measure MASS collection by Design Research Studio, a family of super-polished solid brass pieces, handmade in the UK. Mass is made from solid brass extrusions which provides great solidity, weight and strength.

A 2-meter MASS table will be on display, made from single box extruded sections of brass. The rectangular plank form can be used in a multitude of configurations – a made to measure construction set - with a series of predetermined junctions that allows anyone to construct their own MASS artefact.

We will exhibit a limited-edition MASS 4-poster bed, originally made exclusively for our Materiality exhibition at London Design Festival ’21. Adorning the MASS bed installation will be Kvadrat’s Vidar fabric, originally designed by Fanny Aronsen and recently recoloured by Raf Simons, to contrast with the warm brass tones of the MASS family.

Completing the curated display of LIMITED include the CODE Stack Light Sculpture, chosen from a series of monumental LED structures created in collaboration with Prolicht. Initially born from the ambition to rethink track lighting and to celebrate the ever-evolving world of electronics and LEDs, CODE encapsulates a unique combination of highly technical engineering and decorative lighting in one piece.

Our 100% recyclable HYDRO Chair in Chrome will be on display, created in collaboration with one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, Hydro. The Chair’s ballooned pattern gives strength and rigidity while lending a soft and humorous pop sensibility to the lightweight and metal sheet.

Tom says: ‘A lifelong fascination with modular structures, educational construction kits and an obsession with revealing raw materials in all their majesty are the themes running through this exhibition. A set of archetypical furniture typologies such as a dining table, what-not, console and a 4-poster bed constructed as though from humble planks of wood, but here rethought in rectangular section industrial brass tube for the collection called MASS. A totem made from a simple square repeated module of circuit board becomes the fiercely luminous sculpture called code incorporating over 50,000 L.E.D chips. An innovative super-formed ultra lightweight aluminum chair called HYDRO where the decoration is the structure.’

Helene Bangsbo Andersen says: ‘Set against a super soft backdrop, Design Research Studio is excited to present examples of our exploration into honest, raw materials and familiar typologies. The studio will be in Miami to introduce their portfolio of extraordinary spaces and prototypes for the future.’
