“EPS is incredibly lightweight and totally versatile — making a polystyrene chair has given me the opportunity to fulfill an ambition to make design available to all; this time literally, by giving away hundreds of these chairs to Londoners with absolutely no chains attached, 100 per cent FREE!” During London Design Festival in 2006, in a bid to make design relevant and available to all Londoners, Tom Dixon teamed up with the EPS (expanded polystyrene) Packaging Group to develop a lightweight structural chair concept. The brief was to promote the uses of expanded polystyrene within design by taking a fresh look at a familiar material that was more widely associated with packaging. The project was showcased in London’s Trafalgar Square as part of the London Design Festival. At the end of the day, all 500 chairs were given away, allowing anyone a chance to own Dixon’s latest creation. Whoever arrived first at Trafalgar Square after 3pm was able to choose and take a chair home with them.
