Inspired by the total and engineered efficiency of a standard bicycle wheel, we have created a giant custom Bulb chandelier in the atrium of concept store, Merci in Paris.

The three-metre-wide Bulb installation is tilted to allow visitors to view the piece from two floors whilst cascading a shadow across the floor as light hits the angled bike spokes from the window above.

The wheel of light is built as a ‘kit of parts’ using the existing components of the Bulb Chandelier. Seventy-two energy efficient oversized Bulbs run around the edge of the wheel and electrical cables are laced towards a central hub representing the wheel spokes.

Tom Dixon fills four areas within Merci including a feature on the Mezzanine of Wingback Chairs, a fully upholstered high back lounge chair inspired by the traditional 18thCentury wingback chair.

BULB is an energy efficient oversized light bulb designed in reaction to the phasing-out of the incandescent bulb and the unattractive aesthetic of most CFL replacements. It is a CFL light bulb that can be used without shade. The quick start T5 dimmable bulb is unique to Tom Dixon and the standard E27 thread means that it can be used with almost any light fitting.
