Beat

Our range of Beat lights, recognised in homes, restaurants and hotels the world over is an exercise in expressive minimalism. The original design was inspired by the sculptural simplicity of brass cooking pots and traditional water vessels on the subcontinent. The pendant lights are crafted from solid sheets of brass, available in four different silhouettes, Wide, Fat, Tall and Stout, and in black, white, grey and brushed brass. The Beat collection also includes a wall light and floor and table lights.

Beat emits an atmospheric, ambient quality of light. Made from brass, with an inherant longevity, each piece bears the hallmarks of the craftsman who created it.

In 2012 Tom Dixon was involved in an iniative in the city of Jaipur to create alternative possibilities for the rapidly vanishing craftsmen and their skills. The Beat light was born from that project, created by the renowned artisan craftsmen of Moradabad in Northern India. The production of Beat, imitating the basic proportions and techniques of the traditional brasswork, but targeting a different functionality, keeps part of the craft alive. The interior of each piece bears the beaten marks of its making, spun brass, braised and beaten by hand. Each piece is unique and a testament to a time-consuming and centuries old process – it can take up to 4 days to make one light.
